Sylvia Jay, director general of the Food and Drink Federation, said her organisation was keen to "test the waters" to see whether it would be a good idea to get closer to the wholesale sector  which she said was important to her members. The OFSCI initiative in foodservice was a step in the right direction  and she hoped some of its initiatives could be replicated in the retail side of the wholesale sector. However, she flagged up one issue of concern for many smaller manufacturers. "Their impression is that wholesalers and cash and carries are not interested in core ambient grocery unless it is from a big multinational company." She added: "Many buyers, especially in C&C, want to do a deal but do not want to carry it through to smaller independent retailers and ultimately to the consumer. "Perhaps that is one issue that we can work on to our mutual benefit." {{NEWS }}
