No doubt training has already begun for retailers and suppliers up and down the country hoping to walk off with the coveted Caravan 5-a-side trophy.

The Grocer team has started to talk the talk but as yet we have failed to kick a single ball in anger. And hopes of being crowned champions, which were not high to begin with, are fading fast.

For those not in the know already, the National Grocery 5-a-side Football Championships will take place this year on Saturday 30 June. The JJB Soccerdome at Trafford Park, Manchester plays host to the event and the venue is close to the Bolton HQ of new sponsors Warburton's.

This event is a great day out, representing a rare chance to get one over your bitter or not-so-bitter rivals or impress the boss by scoring the winning goal. It is also an opportunity to raise some much-needed money for a very worthwhile cause.

All money raised through the competition will go directly to Caravan - the charity that supports people in the grocery sector who through no fault of their own have fallen on hard times.

So if your company would like to enter a team in this year's tournament, please contact event organiser Glenn Mousley on 01304 824121 or gcmatmag@aol.com

All that remains to be said is get out there and start training if you want to save everyone's blushes and stop The Grocer claiming the title.
