DEFRA has lifted the last foot and mouth infected area designation in England. The announcement affects 1,500 farms in County Durham, North Yorkshire and Cumbria ­ where the UK's last case of foot and mouth disease was reported on September 30. A spokeswoman for the NFU welcomed the the news but stressed: "The real milestone will be when everywhere is declared risk free three months after the last reported case ­ December 30 ­ at the earliest." {{NEWS }}
