Northern Foods is aiming to have two thirds of its Fletchers Bakeries factory in Sheffield up and running by the end of next month.

A fire ripped through the factory, which employs 650 people and produces a variety of bakery products for the major multiples, on 16 July, forcing retailers to turn to other suppliers for their bakery products.

The company said that one third of the site had been destroyed in the blaze. A further third was under assessment, but the final third remained untouched. It was aiming to have all its workforce back at work by September, either at the site or at other Northern Foods businesses. It added that the destroyed part of the site would be rebuilt and that the fire had not affected its plans to sell the bakery as part of an overhaul of its businesses announced in May. Jeff Halliwell, director for the bakery division, said: "Our focus now is on getting the operations up and running and planning for the longer term."
