There have been further sensationalist headlines claiming the cost of a typical shopping basket has shot up by 19.1% - five times the amount revealed by The Grocer's definitive Grocer Price Index.

The Daily Mail ran stories based on figures from price comparison website www.mysupermarket.co.uk claiming the cost of a basket of 37 basic items at Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda had increased 19.1%.

However, the findings contradict comprehensive figures released by The Grocer this week which showed the average cost of 100 grocery items across Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Waitrose had increased just 2.8%.
