British shoppers are beginning to steer clear of produce with high food miles, according to research from Mintel. One in five now check the source of a product before buying it. And 41% said suppliers and supermarkets did not provide enough information about food miles. Retailers were also not sourcing enough local produce, according to more than half of 2,000 adults surveyed, while 53% believed retailers should do more to develop and promote UK production. "Today's shoppers have become accustomed to an incredible choice of produce in their supermarkets. But frustration tends to run high when products that could be grown in the UK have been flown in from the other side of the world ," said Mintel. The research also found that 60% of consumers thought there should be less packaging on fresh fruit and vegetables.
