Sales of fresh produce, including meats and dairy produce boosted like-for-like food sales in Scotland by 3.4% in November.

The latest Scottish Retail Consortium sales monitor found that in the run up to the festive season there had been an increase in promotional activity for larger sizes and party packs and alcoholic beverages.

While convenience stores had a strong month, the SRC said fireworks did not have the usual impact on sales as most retailers now only sell them for a restricted period.

SRC director Fiona Moriarty said: "While many retailers across the UK will be nervous over the level of Christmas sales, Scottish retailers have something to celebrate already."
