Difficulties in finding new sites continue to thwart the organics specialist Fresh & Wild's ambitions to become Britain's "biggest and best organics retailer".
Although the company has not opened any new stores for over a year, despite securing a £3.5m boost from the Bank of Scotland to fund its expansion plans, it is constantly reviewing sites and is close to securing a seventh store, said ceo Bryan Meehan. "Our like-for-like sales were up 15% in the last three months and our annualised sales are £18m."
Recent price cutting initiatives from the multiples were not necessarily bad for the market if they encouraged more people to try organic food, he added. "I don't have a problem with this as long as the cuts are not coming out of suppliers' margins which is unsustainable in the long term. At Fresh & Wild, we're competitive with the multiples on price, but we're not doing stupid things."
