The Foods Standards Agency has been criticised for failing to stop the trade in illegal meat.

The criticisms follow the FSA’s investigations into a meat and poultry coldstore in Northern Ireland last month.

A senior enforcement officer involved in previous FSA investigations said: “These names keep cropping up again and again and yet there’s no central proactive investigation.”

Last month the FSA said that the focus of the Northern Ireland inquiry was on repackaging and re-labelling activity on the premises, and that emerging evidence suggested the use of illicit health marks.
