The Food Standards Agency has urged consumers to write to retailers and manufacturers to ask why they have refused to adopt the recommended traffic lights front-of-pack labelling scheme.

Speaking at the National Federation of Women's Institutes in Cardiff yesterday, Dame Deirdre Hutton, head of the FSA, praised Sainsbury and Waitrose for adopting the scheme but criticised Tesco, Danone, Kellogg, Kraft, Nestlé and PepsiCo for adopting their own Guideline Daily Amounts labelling.

She said: “It is good news to see progress on front-of-pack labelling given the objections there were to it only a year or two ago. But you have to wonder why these companies are choosing to ignore the weight of evidence and not use traffic light colours in their schemes.”
