Electricals, stationery, greetings cards & wrap and computer games are showing the fastest growth in the supermarkets’ non-food aisles, according to new research from Information Resources analysed in our Non-Food Report on page 37.
However, two categories predicted to show the strongest growth over the next few years were gardening, up by 5.2% to £709.4m, and mobile phones and accessories, up by 1.55% to £160.6m in the year to July 3, despite supermarkets’ lack of specialist staff.
Horticultural Trades Association director of commercial services, Andrew Maxted, said: “Supermarkets are helping to expand the garden, although plants is a difficult category because they need constant attention.” Non-food sales in grocery rose 12.2% to £11.6bn over the same period.
