Food redistribution charity FareShare is hoping to give 16,000 disadvantaged people a Christmas to remember this year - but it needs your support.

The charity is planning to provide special food hampers containing everything needed to make a traditional Christmas meal - including turkey, fresh vegetables and, of course, a pudding. Hampers will be distributed to 250 organisations around the country - who will then cook the festive fare and provide a warm, safe place where it can be eaten in the company of others.

To ensure its Christmas Meal Appeal is a success, FareShare is looking for retailers or food manufacturers to help either by donating food or providing logistical or financial support. The Grocer has already pledged its support for the appeal.

CEO Tony Lowe said: “With the industry’s help we can light up the festive season for some of the half a million older people and one in three homeless who would normally spend the festivities alone.”

He added: “We can’t think of a better way of celebrating Christmas than knowing that thousands of vulnerable people will eat at least one good meal in good company.”

Outside of Christmas, FareShare redistributes surplus food from the industry to vulnerable people in the community - feeding a staggering 12,000 people in food poverty every day
