There has been a 21% increase in the volume of GM crops planted in the EU over the past year, according to biotech industry body EuropaBio. The cultivated acreage had risen tenfold in Poland and Romania, with major increases also seen in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, the group claimed. Overall there are now 107,719 hectares of biotech crops in the bloc. Currently only one type of GM maize is allowed to be grown in the EU, and EuropaBio called on authorities to relax their stance.
