The government is determined to back the industry over GM crops and is ignoring public opposition, it has been claimed.

Michael Meacher former environment minister, said he suspected the government is looking for a way to overcome public opposition to GM foods.

He told The Independent newspaper that environment secretary David Miliband, must take on board responses rejecting the government's GM contamination plans and put in place policies that protect GM-free food and promise his vision of sustainable farming.

Meacher's remarks came in response to the launch of a new government consultation over whether GM crops can co exist with non-GM crops in the British countryside.
