There is no need for an independent regulator to monitor the supermarket code, the Department of Trade and Industry has said.

Numerous groups have called on the government to set up an independent regulator to investigate supermarket practices following the Office of Fair Trading’s call for evidence of breaches to the supermarket code.

However, trade minister, Alun Michael, said that as the OFT’s review had failed to highlight any breaches, “it would be wrong to over-regulate without evidence of the need to do so.”

“The OFT can only take action under the code if there’s firm evidence of problems,” he added.
