Conflicting reports about the credibility of environmental and health claims on food packaging have created suspicion in today's consumers, according to a study by IBM.

The study of 612 respondents found 70% of consumers expressed a "low overall trust" in the legitimacy of both green and wellness claims on packaging.

The study also found that product contaminations and recalls had eroded consumers' trust in manufacturers, with almost half of the respondents stating they were concerned about food safety following high profile recalls of chocolate, bagged salads, fresh herbs and babyfood.
