Inter Link Foods said July's heatwave hit cake sales, resulting in a year-on-year 3.3% fall in Q1 like-for-like turnover.

However, orders on Christmas lines were up on last year, said executive chairman Alwin Thompson, with mince pies and Christmas-themed celebration cakes doing particularly well.

Thompson added: “The increased seasonal nature of the group's business does inevitably change the balance of sales towards the second half of the year, which may be accentuated this year as indications from our customers suggest that orders during November and December will be particularly strong.”

Inter Link Foods holds its AGM in Blackburn later today.
