Consumers are buying more premium and indulgence products, not through a desire for better quality but because they are stressed or bored, according to a new report.
Datamonitor said that British consumers were spending more on high quality snacks and drinks, such as McCoy’s Specials, Walkers Sensations and Innocent drinks, as a way of combating stress or boredom. “Rising levels of stress and consequently the need to unwind drive high quality snacking,” said Daniel Bone, consumer market analyst at Datamonitor.
A total of £1bn was spent last year on premium snacks and drinks, and Datamonitor has predicted that this will rise to £1.2bn by 2009.
