Up to 450 food manufacturing businesses could fail in 2009, suggests research from accountancy firm BDO Stoy Hayward.

Business failures are expected to rise by 50% in 2009 versus 2008, and warned manufacturing was an at-risk area, with 3,000 failures expected. As food producers make up 15% of manufacturers, this suggests as many as 450 of the UK's 6,500 food manufacturers could face failure.

"We've had volatility in commodity prices, competitive price pressure from retailers, all coupled with the downturn," said FDF director of communications Julian Hunt.
