The government is expected to publish its Identity Cards Bill this afternoon following outline plans given in the Queen’s Speech last week.

Retailers welcome the government’s plans for a national ID card scheme but they are keen to see more details on the plans, such as a defined age at which people will receive ID cards.

The Association of Convenience Stores chief executive David Rae said last week that he was disappointed that the government had not announced a specific date for the launch.

He urged independents not to wait for the cards to introduce a strict no-ID, no-sale policy on relevant products.
