Sir; Neither the news item "UK organics threatened'' in the Grocer, nor the Commons Select Committee on Agriculture mentioned that an international body for organics does exist. IFOAM is the International Federation of Organic Agriculture movement. Its standards are higher than those of the EU, they exist out-with government and its members include the majority of certification bodies in the EU, US and raw material producing countries. The Soil Association is the best-known standards organisation accredited to IFOAM in the UK. Accreditation of certification standards through IFOAM would by-pass the interminable bilateral negotiations approaching between the EU and US, the EU and Japan, Japan and US etc. and create the level playingfield needed by producers.
