Imperial Tobacco is to shed 800 jobs as it merges its operations with German cigarette maker Reemtsma, which it acquired last May.

The majority of job cuts will come from corporate operations as the tobacco giant integrates management functions across Europe.

The UK based maker of Embassy and Superkings said its corporate headquarters will remain in Bristol while its manufacturing base will be moved to Hamburg. International sales and marketing will be consolidated into a single hq at Slough in the UK from existing operations in Nottingham, Bristol, Hamburg and Joure.

The company also confirmed the only factories to close would be in Nordhausen in Germany and Mazé²¥s in France.
