English pear growers are being given greater prominence this year because retailers are concerned that alternative imported supplies from Holland may not be available in the longer term. Adrian Barlow of English Aples and Pears said that this industry was living under the threat of an export ban because of the discovery of CCC pesticide residues, expected to be banned by the Community next year. "It is not surprising because many people have now begun to realise the consequences," said Barlow. Holland exports around 60,000 tonnes, mainly Conference, to the UK, representing about a third of annual consumption. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
