The government is unlikely to make any move to block cheap poultry imports.
DEFRA food and farming minister Elliot Morley, speaking at the British Poultry Council annual lunch, said: "There is no prospect of action to increase tariff protection or block imports."
He also said current WTO talks were likely to cut tariffs further. "The industry will need to continue to restructure and innovate to meet the challenge."
However, Morley added the government would continue to act where there was clear evidence of illegal competition and deliberate attempts to circumvent existing tariff barriers.
