New powers that would allow local authority hygiene inspectors to turn up unannounced at livestock farms and meat processors are up for consultation. Defra's proposals are backed by new EU legislation.

Bird kickers face jail

Two men filmed kicking turkeys on a Bernard Matthews farm and beating them with sticks are to face charges, following a 10-week probe by the RSPCA and Norfolk police. If convicted, they face six months in prison and a £5,000 fine.
