This month’s poll of independent retailers gives a more optimistic picture of trading than last month, with nearly three-quarters of respondents saying it has improved or at least stayed the same as last year.
But net profit margins are still being hit. Nearly a quarter say they are running behind last year and just 15% that they are up on the same period last year. However, independents are a resilient bunch and more than half expect sales over the next three months to be better, up from last month’s figure of 44%, while 26% expect sales over the next quarter to be the same.
Last month one in five of those polled expected to invest more in their business. This month it has risen to one in four.
