>>retailers divided over trading comparisons

A mixed picture emerges from this month’s poll of independent retailers. A third of those quizzed by The Knowledge Store said trade was worse than a year ago, another third that it was better and the final third that it was the same as this time last year.

Net profit margins have been affected, with nearly two thirds reporting they are the same or worse than the same period last year and 18% saying they are better. However, the picture is more rosy when it comes to the outlook for the next three months, according to the barometer. Only one in 10 thought sales would be worse over the coming three months while 44% said they expected sales to be better and 34% to be the same. One in five of those polled expect to invest more in their business now.
