Ireland is to place health warnings on cans and bottles of alcoholic drinks to help curb over indulgence by the country's drinkers and to protect teenagers.

The Prime minister Bertie Ahern told a conference of European brewers in Dublin that he proposes to introduce a bill to stop alcohol advertising on tv and radio before 10pm. And that such ads would also be banned from cinemas, public transport and sports stadiums.

Ahern warned of the attitude to drinking that is becoming widespread in Irish society. He said: “This attitude prioritises drinking to get drunk and binge drinking, rather than having a few social drinks with friends.

"Unfortunately, this abuse of alcohol has become a serious matter in our society.”
