Ireland might become a less abundant source of cheap supply if Dublin can bring about consolidation of the export processing sector.
Agriculture minister Joe Walsh plans an industry summit to formulate a detailed plan for factory shutdowns, according to the Irish Farmers' Journal. Official backing is expected for a buyout scheme similar to a levy-funded programme suggested for the British industry by the MLC back in the 1970s.
Operators staying would pay those quitting, using profits generated by a tighter market to finance rationalisation.
