UK retail sales rose 3.1% last month - the strongest growth for January in three years - according to the British Retail Consortium.

The three-month rate of growth rose to 4.1% from 4% in December, while food sales were at their strongest since July's heatwave-driven growth, the BRC said.

“Much of the growth has been driven by the grocery sector and discounting has been fairly widespread in several other categories. The comparatives from last year are weak and the November and January interest rate increases have yet to make themselves felt,” warned Kevin Hawkins, director general of the BRC.
