Food and drink manufacturers are recording "stellar" performances in recruitment at a time of financial uncertainty due to the war with Iraq.
Recruitment firm Manpower said job prospects in the industry were the second best out of any manufacturing sector.
Manpower's Quarterly Survey of Employment Prospects said a balance of 14% of food and drink manufacturers planned to take on staff in April to June. The figure is well above the balance for manufacturers as a whole.
Manpower marketing director Hazel Detsiny said: "This is a stellar performance which has outperformed all other manufacturing businesses we survey, bar wood and paper."
The company attributed the results to more modernisation and competitiveness. However, manufacturers had mirrored other sectors, with employment prospects in the north of England dwarfing those in the south.
