The Environment Agency has urged the industry to sign up to the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme, which came into force this week.

The scheme, which affects 5,000 companies that used at least 6,000MW of half-hourly metered electricity in 2008, aims to cut CO2 emissions by 11.6 million tonnes a year by 2020.

Next year the agency will publish league tables of the CRC's best and worst performers.

The agency said that although supermarkets were leading the way in cutting emissions, some wholesalers or manufacturers may not be aware that they needed to register.
