Local food producers should build links with small independents in their area rather than large supermarkets, according to a new DEFRA funded report. The document is part of the Food and Local Agriculture Information Resource project, supported by DEFRA's Environmental Action Fund. Author Sarah Watson explained: "Local shops and local food producers have a lot to gain from supporting each other and many of the wider social and environmental gains will only be achieved by adopting this strategy. Selling local food through big supermarket chains will only weaken the independent sector and maintain the arm-lock farmers find themselves in." {{NEWS }}
