Volume exports of flowers from Kenya rose 45% to 88,000 tonnes between 2003 and 2004. Value exports rose 13.5% to $253m.
Erastus Mureithi, chairman of the Kenya Flower Council, said that 23% of flowers exported from Kenya went to the UK, mostly to the major supermarkets.
He added: “The main flower types being exported are roses, carnations, alstromeria and summer flowers.”
The Kenya Flower Council this week became the first national growers’ association to be credited with the EurepGap ornamentals scheme.
