Challenge to fashion National Sheep Association chief executive John Thorley has upset some of his members by challenging the commercial wisdom of their breeding strategy, in particular the "fashion" for Suffolks with big heads and heavy frames. Breeders are reported to be indignant after Thorley warned them to stop increasing the proportion of worthless bone in the carcase. Producers say the strong frame is needed to support fast-growing heavy muscle, important in a volatile market, but Thorley's criticism echoed processors' and retailers' complaints of low saleable meat yields from too many British lambs. {{MEAT }}
