Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile and Bolivia have agreed a joint strategy to eradicate foot and mouth from South America in the next five years. The programme is part of a $48m project for the eradication of foot and mouth in the Americas.
A combination of a vaccination programme and epidemiological controls, such as strict limits on movement, will be used.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates has lifted its ban on imports of British sheep and goat meat, imposed since the UK’s foot and mouth epidemic of 2001. The move followed lobbying by the Welsh Assembly and Meat Promotion Wales (HCC).
