Channel Islands-based Le Riche's Stores is piloting a convenience store format that will be rolled out across its small store estate in Jersey and Guernsey if trials prove successful.
The new-style store, dubbed Checkers Express, will be trialled at a site in St Aubin, Jersey, in July.
The convenience format will include a stronger fresh food range, chilled wines and hot food to go. The trial also sees the introduction of specially designed fixtures and fittings.
Now part of Jersey-based conglomerate CI Traders, Le Riche's operates more than 40 food retail stores in Jersey and Guernsey under the Checkers, Stampers, Le Riche's and Island Shopper fascias.
However, the Checkers brand, currently attached to the company's largest stores, has the most cachet, said head of marketing John Garton.
"Checkers is the most successful brand, no doubt about it. This will be the next generation of convenience store." A second Checkers Express will be piloted in Guernsey shortly.
Separately, the company is pumping £12m into a new three-storey retail development at Red Houses, St Brelade, Jersey.
This will feature an underground car park and an 18,000 sq ft Checkers store, due to open in 2005.
