Marks & Spencer has confirmed the closure of four stores.

The retailer revealed last month that it was considering axeing stores in Scunthorpe, Skegness, Grantham and Nuneaton due to declining sales.

"We have consulted with our employee representatives, listening carefully to their views and suggestions, as well as those of the local community,” said M&S head of region Rob Davies.

“Unfortunately, none of the proposed alternatives we received would have made the stores commercially viable and therefore, it was necessary for us to make this difficult decision."

The stores are expected to remain open until January 2011.
