M&S is planning to give its food shoppers free bags for life until 5 May when it plans to start charging 5p per plastic carrier bag. The move is part of the retailer’s Plan A eco strategy. It is planning to reduce the number of carrier bags it uses by at least a third. It currently gives out 394 million bags a year. The move to charge for bags follows successful trials in Northern Ireland and the south west. The free bags for life normally sell for 10p each.
