CTN retailer Maynews plans to bolster its home news delivery service this year to compete against the supermarkets.

Maynews, which has 19 stores, was "aggressively looking" to build the service by adding more rounds, said MD Tony Wright. It currently delivers newspapers and magazines to 6,000 homes a week.

"HND is very profitable," he said. "We have done a lot in developing it by buying rounds from existing businesses or buying stores already offering it."

The company has opened three shops in the past three month. Although newstrade was "in turmoil", Wright said he was confident about Maynews' future.

"I have been through three recessions, but whatever happens, people still want to read a newspaper, smoke and make impulse purchases like drink and ice cream," he said.
