German retail group Metro has installed the first self-checkout at a hypermarket in its home market.

The Warenhaus hypermarket in Ratingen has set up the system as an alternative to 13 existing checkouts to enable shoppers to speed up the process of scanning, packing and paying for goods.

In addition to the new checkouts there is also a "customer assistance counter" from where a store employee can monitor what is happening at the checkouts and to authorize the sale of alcohol and other products subject to legal regulation.
