Metro Group, the German retail and wholesale giant, is set to wade into the Competition Commission investigation into the UK grocery market, it emerged this week.

In a letter to the Commission, Philipp Dautzenberg, MD of cash & carry operator Makro, which is owned by Metro, invites the inquiry team to discuss its investigation with HQ staff. Metro, he says, "has much experience of grocery markets and competition issues across Europe".

He goes on: "Our colleagues at head office in Düsseldorf would be happy to enter into a constructive dialogue with you to assist in your investigation." Earlier in the letter, Dautzenberg says Makro is concerned about the two-market definition of grocery.

Meanwhile, the Commission is in the throes of setting up personal hearings to take place over the next two months as part of its investigation into the grocery market.
