German retailer Metro has opened its first Metro cash and carry store in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

Metro’s chief executive, Hans-Joachim Korber, said that the group is the first major international trading company to operate in the Ukraine. He added: “With 48.5 million inhabitants and a continuously rising purchasing power, Ukraine holds an enormous market potential for Metro group.”

The store - completed in less than six months - sells more than 20,000 products and covers 10,000 square metres.
