German group Metro is taking its highly profitable C&C operation to Russia in a bid to capitalise on the potentially huge new market. Metro CEO Hans Joachim-Korber believes "the size of the Russian market represents a huge expansion opportunity" for the company, which has been the subject of persistent takeover speculation in recent months. "There are 13 cities in Russia with a population of more than one million people," he pointed out. The first Metro cash and carry is scheduled to open for business in Moscow in 2002, with a further five planned for greater Moscow by 2005. The move is consistent with the company's stated aim of increasing its international presence to offset difficult trading conditions at home. {{NEWS }}
