The British Retail Consortium has blasted the government's decision to raise the national minimum wage by 6% to £5.35 an hour from October this year.

Kevin Hawkins, director general of the British Retail Consortium, said: “We are dismayed but hardly surprised that the government has agreed to another above-inflation increase in the national minimum wage.”

He added: “Above-inflation wage increases could lead to around 35,000 jobs being lost and this increase will add £1.13bn to the retail industry's costs, which are already increasing well above inflation.”
