The British Pig Executive is poised to launch its abattoir monitoring scheme country-wide from July 4 after a successful pilot programme.
The scheme is designed to improve the health and efficiency of the national herd. Inspectors look for key health conditions in carcasses in the abattoir and pass the information back to farmers and their vets.
BPEX claimed the scheme could be worth as much as 5p/kg deadweight to farmers.
Strategy co-ordinator Andrew Knowles said the scheme was extremely cost-effective and that sponsorship from both Defra and the industry had sharply reduced the cost to producers.
