The government has hailed 1999 a boom year for organic farming and has pledged more cash backing. MAFF parliamentary sectary Elliot Morley said: "Last year we greatly increased the incentives and decided to dedicate real resources. The government sees this very much as the start of a longer process. "We plan to double the budget for organic conversion and have earmarked £140m over the length of the seven year Rural Development Plan." More than 1,100 farmers joined up to the ministry's new scheme for organic conversion in 1999 ­ doubling the figure for the previous year. {{NEWS }}
