Mediterranean citrus growers are continuing to plant more easy peelers, according to annual estimates produced by the Mediterranean Citrus Producers’ Association (CLAM).
Total production of clementines and mandarins is expected to rise from 4.1 million tonnes to 4.7 million.
Orange production is static at 9.6 million tonnes and growers are switching towards better-tasting mid-season Navels. Lemon production is also static at 2.46 million tonnes.
With the winter citrus market over-supplied, only half of the crop will be sold into the fresh trade, with the rest supplying local needs or processors.
CLAM indicates the traded figure for easy peelers will be 2.1 million tonnes, with oranges at 2.8 million tonnes.
