FareShare has enough food for 1.2 million people after its Million Meals Appeal with Sainsbury’s smashed its target.
The food redistribution charity held the appeal in Sainsbury’s supermarkets last weekend, asking customers to donate store cupboard items to help it feed the 700 charities it serves.
FareShare said the response to the appeal, which followed a trial in 17 Sainsbury’s stores, had been “overwhelming” –1.2 million meals had been donated by consumers and Sainsbury’s, which pledged to match donations.
FareShare volunteers and Sainsbury’s staff were assisted by Allied Bakeries staff, who helped out on the day and gave logistical support. Allied Bakeries CEO Mark Fairweather also volunteered at Sainsbury’s Bury St Edmunds store.
“A great time was had by all and we were truly blown away by everyone’s enthusiasm,” a Sainsbury’s spokesman said.
