Cross-party support is growing for the Office of Fair Trade to investigate competition concerns in the newspaper and magazine sector following Dawson News' loss of six major distribution contracts in three months.

Simon Hughes, Liberal Democrat MP for North Southwark and Bermondsey, has tabled an Early Day Motion calling on Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Lord Mandelson to ask the OFT to investigate. It had the support of 29 MPs as The Grocer went to press.

The OFT should look "urgently at these recent developments in the distribution market and take action to safeguard competition for the benefit of consumers, independent newsagents and distribution employees", Hughes said.

Meanwhile, Labour MP Kerry McCarthy and Conservative MP Mark Field have tabled questions in the House of Commons.
